Exercise 2

This poster outlines my first study for each of the subjects.

For Circulation I have isolated and modelled the circulation elements in the building and shown how they fit in with the context of the entire building.

For structure I have isolated the structural elements in the building and split the levels to show how the building is fit together. Through first look a these images, it seems that the structural elements are on a regular grid, it is later discovered that they are not and also why.

For the public and private spaces study, I have filled the different spaces with a shaped coloured with the corresponding colour as to whether it is public, private or a multi-use space. I chose to use a multi-use colour to identify certain spaces as spaces such as the first floor balcony/terrace is extremely private to the outside world as it is surrounded by the full height walls, but on the other hand, it is open to public use once inside the building and how the circulation of the building works, the area is set out to embrace people as the make their way through the house.

This poster outlines the structural elements of the house. It shows a model of the model I made of the 'T' Beam and column system. It also outlines the study I did of the column layout and investigating how the building may operate if the columns were set out on a regular grid.

This poster outlines a circulation study using both circulation and public and private spaces. The images on the top and bottom left show how public and private circulation moves throughout and to and from the house. This study reveals that building has a very private dominated design as the public or visitors are immediately directed up and away from the ground floor, though through research, it has been revealed that the idea was originally for the visitors to 'have the choice to ascend the ramp or climb the spiral stairs', though it seems that the stairs are designed to be excluded from public circulation.
The drawing to the bottom right is related to the transparent slides I made and it shows where the sections are taken through the house. It just makes the slides a little easier to understand.

1:20 Scale model of the 'T' Beam and column system from the entry foyer. The model sums up the entire thinking of Corbusier in relation to circulation and structure, being that the column and beam could have been identical to the ones next to it, but Corbusier split it to create this T shape. It shows how Corbusier was thinking of circulation from the first stages and how important circulation is.
The model is made from timber and card and is presented on foam core.

These are images of my transparent sections taken from main parts of the house. The sections use a simple colour coded system to outline the area such as public, private and multi-use, which can be thought of as both. By looking through all slides, it is seen how the house is predominately public based in the centre and the surrounding areas are both private and multi-use spaces.

My Architectural Proposition is based around a building that embraces and is built around nature, or at least with it in mind. The main idea is to bring the outside in and have nature all around. My idea of great architecture is a building that embraces and blends with the environment that surrounds it instead of impacting it.
My drawings represent the Villa Savoye embracing nature. The Villa was designed originally in conjunction with nature, but my drawings represent bringing nature into the design.

The drawings are rendered by leaving the building stark white so that the nature around it is the main focus and have the most importance in the drawing.
